The refer to the nearly transparent gases that cover the earth
The nearly transparent gases that cover the earth is called the atmosphere. The atmosphere is composed of different gases, with nitrogen taking the most portion and oxygen being second in the rank. It has various functions such as the following:
- Protection - the atmosphere protects the earth from the harmful solar radiation the sun emits. Without the atmosphere, all water on earth would boil and organisms would die from the intense damage caused by UV rays.
- Greenhouse effect - the natural greenhouse effect that the atmosphere provides is good for the planet. It regulates the heat that is trapped inside the earth. However, the greenhouse effect caused by human activities and pollution is what is bad because it increases the heat to more than what is normal.
- Air to Breathe - the atmosphere provides us the oxygen-rich air that we need to breathe to remain alive. It also provides the carbon dioxide that plants need to produce their own food.
